Solar Power for Greenhouses
Greenhouses can rely on just solar energy for constant heat. (greenhouse image by Paulo Ribeiro from Fotolia.com)

By definition, greenhouses rely on the sun for light. However, many greenhouses also use gas or oil for heat. Converting to a solar-power-only greenhouse may save the grower money and energy.

Function

A solar-powered greenhouse stores the sun's energy in its building materials and uses it on cloudy days and at night.

Location

A solar-powered greenhouse usually faces south, having its northern side well insulated. This provides the most exposure to sunlight. The greenhouse's southern side has a glaze that retains sun energy well.

Use of Heaters

Solar-powered greenhouses usually still have a gas or oil heater as a backup. They may also use the heater to provide higher levels of carbon dioxide for plant growth.
