The Canon EOS 400D is a mid-level, digital single-lens reflex camera. It offers instant image review and advanced features that include the use of interchangeable lenses. While the 400D is designed to be easy, working with some of the camera's hidden features can immediately improve your shooting. As always, the best way to learn about a camera is to spend time behind the lens.
Using Proper Auto-Focus
The 400D has three autofocus modes to match the amount of motion being shot: one-shot, AI-focus and AI-servo. One-shot mode locks the focus as the shutter button is held halfway. This is the default focus mode. AI-focus mode locks the focus until the subject begins moving and will adjust the focus as needed. AI-servo mode will continually adjust the focus for high motion subjects. To change the focus mode, press the "AF" button on the directional pad. Highlight the appropriate mode and press the shutter button halfway to apply the change.
Using Exposure Bracketing
"Bracketing" is a photographic technique where the camera takes several photos with slightly different settings. The exposure bracketing mode forces the camera to take three photos: one at the set exposure, one lighter exposure and one darker exposure. This technique is used to correct errors in auto exposure when a large portion of the image is unrepresentative of the rest, such as a cloud. To apply exposure bracketing, press the "Menu" button and navigate to the "AEB" settings. Press the "Set" button and then use the left and right arrow buttons to set the bracketing amount. Plus or minus 1 stop is a standard amount. The next three pictures the camera takes will be part of the bracketing sequence.
Use Continuous Shooting
The 400D is capable of taking up to three frames per second. This rapid succession of photos can make capturing a unique moment easier. Turn on continuous shooting by pressing the drive mode button above the directional pad. Highlight the middle icon and press the "Set" button. Hold down the shutter button to take several pictures quickly. For best results, hold down the button slightly before a quality moment and release it slightly after.
