The ultraviolet frequency of black light is higher than the violet colour of the spectrum that the human eye can distinguish. Beyond the violet colour on a spectrum are colours that humans can't see. These colours are known as ultraviolet colours. Black light produces ultraviolet light. When things glow in the dark, they are coated with a substance such as a phosphor, which converts energy in black light to visible light.
