Natural oils can be used on hair for health, shine and nourishment. Argan, jojoba, olive and coconut oils are just a few. Some oils are best applied directly to your hair as a pre-shampoo treatment or daily moisturiser. You can also find hair care products such shampoos and conditioners with these oils as active ingredients.

Argan Oil

Argan oil comes from the kernels of the argan fruit. Referred to as miracle oil by the Argan Oil Society and as liquid gold by beauty experts, it has the ability to penetrate hair and hydrate it from the inside out. Vitamin E and natural antioxidants are present in argan oil, which is helpful in repairing damage to hair done by heat styling and other processes. Argan oil has high concentrations of omega-3 and omega-9, which are unsaturated fatty acids that strengthen the hairs protein bonds, resulting in healthier stronger hair. It is also promotes hair growth.

Jojoba Oil

It comes from the seeds of the jojoba plant that is mainly found in southwestern United States. It is also contains vitamin E, as well as antioxidant properties to help repair damaged hair.

Enhance your shampoo or conditioner with a few tablespoons of pure jojoba oil for added moisture and shine. Use it weekly as a hot oil treatment for dry hair. Warm the bottle of jojoba oil by placing it bowl of hot water. Apply it to your hair, then cover your hair with a plastic cap. Wash the oil from your hair after 20 to 30 minutes.

Olive Oil

Olive oil comes from the fruit of the olive tree and when used on the hair and scalp it conditions the hair, helps control dandruff and adds shine. Olive oil helps repair damaged hair when used a pre-shampoo treatment. Warm 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil or 3 tablespoons for longer hair and massage it into your hair and scalp. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and wash after 30 minutes. For maximum penetration of the oil, sit under a hooded dryer for 20 minutes before washing.

Olive oil is best in its purest form, but products such as Hollywood Beauty and Organic Root Stimulator are products infused with olive oil that can be found in beauty supply stores or superstores.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil, which is very fragrant, is extracted from the mature coconuts of the coconut palm tree. Coconut oil has the ability to penetrate hair to hydrate it when applied topically. It also minimises protein lost from the hair, reduces split ends and strengthens and softens it.

Apply a small amount of extra virgin coconut oil to your hair daily, concentrating on the ends for moisture and shine that will last all day. Use it as a deep conditioner after shampooing your hair by applying a quarter sized amount to your hair, or more for longer hair, then cover with a plastic cap. Allow it to penetrate your hair for 1 hour and then rinse it out.
