Many merchants count on the Christmas holidays for much of the business they expect to do for the year. One of the ways they prepare for the holiday is to create eye-catching window displays. These not only usher in the Christmas feelings, but also alert window shoppers of the wares inside. With enough thought, it's possible to create a beautiful display for the window that provides the shop owner with a soft sell approach to Christmas window decorating.

Fine art and gift shops
Shops that sell the works of commercial artists like Thomas Kinkade, Mary Engelbreit or Greg Olsen have a number of window decorating options available to them. In addition to having some eye-catching pieces of art to display, many of these artists also license their work for other products. For example, a display of this sort might include a two or three pieces of framed art on easels of varying heights. To complement the art, add a rocking chair and toss a throw blanket and pillow with the artist's work on it in the chair. Finally, set up a side table adorned with Christmas globes, figurines, trinket boxes and puzzle boxes.
Santa and the elves
Santa and his elves represents one of the iconic images of Christmas. This type of display still works, however, because people will probably always associate Christmas with Santa and the elves.
This set-up will work for a number of different store types. On the grown-up end of things, dressing adult mannequins up in elf and Santa garb could highlight some of the toasty winter fashions available in a clothing store. A toy store might dress some of its dolls up in Santa and elf outfits or have the dolls function as the toys in the bags that Santa and his elves are stuffing into the bags for Christmas morning. Enhance this display by adding items like a Christmas tree and packages as well as items that you'd find in Santa's workshop like tools and work benches.
Many people like to travel to warm places during the Christmas holiday. If you own a travel agency and want to decorate for Christmas, you have several options available to you. Bring some mannequins to represent Santa and Mrs. Claus on vacation during the holiday. Position them in lawn chairs on a faux beach. Hang travel posters up that announce your holiday travel specials.
Be sure to include the typical Christmas colours of red and green generously in this display since it's not a stereotypical Christmas display. For example, wrap a red and green scarf around the Clauses, have them sitting in red lawn chairs, add a green beach umbrella and for the Christmas touch, place a few wrapped Christmas packages at their feet for them to unwrap.
