Saved by the Bell was a big part of Saturday mornings for many kids of the 1980s and 1990s. The show chronicled the lives of the students of Bayside High School in California, and two of the more popular characters were sweethearts Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski. Kelly, played by Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, represented the quintessential girl-next-door with her wholesome image and cheery personality. Dressing up as Kelly for Halloween can create lots of fun nostalgia.

More often than not, Kelly dressed as a classic all-American girl of the '80s. Her tops often consisted of crop-tops, floral prints or oversized, off-the-shoulder sweatshirts with rolled sleeves. Navel-bearing was not quite in fashion at the time, so make sure your costume choice remains modest in that regard. As for trousers, acid-wash jeans with rolled cuffs were common in Kelly's wardrobe. She also wore rolled-cuff denim shorts, bike shorts and other classic '80s options. Kelly's shoes were usually flat Keds-style sneakers, usually worn without socks. Kelly kept make-up to a minimum, with just a bit of pink lip gloss and little else. Her hair tended to be worn down around her shoulders for everyday school style.
Bayside Tigers Cheerleader
A large part of Kelly's identity concerned her status as a Bayside cheerleader. Bayside High's school colours were maroon, grey and white, so look for a cheerleading outfit with similar colours. A white, pleated skirt and maroon shirt could work as a makeshift cheerleading outfit in a pinch. The website "80s Tees" sells a replica of a Bayside cheerleading T-shirt. This shirt could be worn with a pair of denim shorts as a cheerleading off-time outfit. While cheerleading, Kelly's hair was usually pulled back into a high ponytail, complete with fluffy fringe. Make sure that you use a scrunchie to hold your hair or the wig up, as scrunchies were very popular at the time, due in part to Kelly's influence on young girls.
In the episode "Jessie's Song," the girls--Kelly, Lisa and Jessie--decide to form a band, which they called Hot Sundae. Their song became something of a cult classic among Saved by the Bell Fans. In the music video for "Put Your Mind to It, Go For It," the girls don Spandex workout attire. Kelly first wears a two-piece pink floral thong with hot-pink Capri stretch trousers beneath. During later parts of the video, she can be seen in a purple-and-black striped one-piece with black Capri stretch trousers. If you can't find similar prints, any kind of workout wear that looks as though it belongs in the '80s or early '90s will do. The girls wear white sneakers with white slouch socks with their workout clothing. As with cheerleading, Kelly's pulls her hair up into a scrunchie-held ponytail. For added fun, see if you can wrangle two friends to dress as Lisa and Jessie to make the whole band, and perform the dance.
