One of the challenges of having a teenage girlfriend is that, most often, you are a teenager yourself. Teenagers rarely have a lot of disposable income, so you may be worrying about finding a Christmas gift that doesn't scream "cheap." Fortunately, women of all ages appreciate a thoughtful, romantic gift, regardless of its price. Give some thought to what makes that special girl giggle and swoon, and you can give her a gift that will make the twinkle in her eye last all season.

Music

Even if she already has an MP3 player, get her a new one and fill it with the sappiest, most romantic love songs you can find. If she drives, slip a mix-CD of "your" songs into her car stereo. If you want to splurge, give her tickets to see her favourite group in concert the next time they're in your area. Add a note telling her that she brings music to your life.

Scent

Perfume is expensive, but you don't need to buy her perfume. If you know your girlfriend's favourite scent, you can give her dusting powder, soap, lotion and body spray for a fraction of the price of the same scent in perfume. If she doesn't have a favourite, buy her a pretty crystal atomiser and a small bottle of cologne that reminds you of her.

Cosy things

Some clothing gifts are too personal, so stick with hats, gloves and scarves. Get her a long, woolly scarf in her favourite colour; matching gloves and a hat would be welcome, too. You could also get sets of things so that the two of you will match: two long, fringed cashmere mufflers; two red-and-white striped pointed stocking caps with tassels; or matching his-and-hers lined suede gloves.

Jewellery

Costume jewellery can be tricky if your girlfriend has very particular tastes, but there are a few ideas that are almost always winners with teenage girls. If she wears necklaces, get her a delicate chain with a floating heart charm or a small, heart-shaped locket containing your picture or a tiny love note. She might love a dozen very thin metal or enamel bangle bracelets or stud earrings featuring her birthstone.
