Whether you are dressing up for Halloween or some other type of costume party, it's fun to pick a theme. There are lots of costume options that are perfect for a 1960s theme. You can make many of these costumes with items you already have at home. For some, you might need to make a quick trip to a party store or a thrift shop, but there is no need to buy an expensive costume to dress like someone from the 1960s.

Everyone recognises the hippie as a 1960s icon. For a male hippie costume, wear a pair of bell-bottomed jeans and a long peasant shirt. Add a beard, a long wig and a peace sign necklace. A woman could wear basically the same thing. A woman also could wear a long, floor-length flowing dress and pair it with long hair parted down the middle. For a fun twist on the hippie costume, go as a Woodstock music festival attendee. Wear the same clothes, but stain them with mud.

British Invasion

The British invasion was a big deal in the 1960s. Dress up as characters that signify the influx of British style and music to the U.S. in the '60s. For a woman, buy a dress that looks like the British flag. Pair the dress with tall white boots and wear 1960s make-up, such as blue eyeshadow and pink lipstick. If you can't find such a dress, order British flag fabric online and make one yourself. The most iconic symbol of the British invasion is the Beatles. This is a perfect costume for men. Buy a 1960s-style suit at a thrift store and pair it with a floppy Beatles wig. You and three friends could go as the whole band.

You could dress up as lots of famous icons from the 1960s. For women, consider dressing up as Jackie Kennedy, as she is considered a 1960s style icon. Choose a dress from a thrift shop or a vintage store that is reminiscent of her style. A fitted jacket paired with a pencil skirt and a pillbox hat would be perfect. Pair the outfit with a black bob wig and large black sunglasses. Men can go as famous 1960s musicians, such as Jimi Hendrix or Jerry Garcia. Wear a hippie costume and carry around a guitar or a record of their music.
