Electrical systems in a vehicle are pertinent for smooth operation of all components. These work through a vehicle's battery and include systems like ventilation, locks, starter, headlights and more. When a vehicle's battery is weak, or fails, it exhibits different symptoms to look out for.

Sluggish starting

According to experts at the Car Care website, one of the main symptoms of a weak battery includes sluggish starting. This symptom has a unique sound, as if the car is coughing before it starts. Regular sluggish starting is a major indicator that the battery is about to fail and is very weak. In addition, an unexpected sluggish start after a period of perfectly regular operation is another indicator that the battery is weak and about to fail.

Dim headlights

Headlights are a component that can be used to assess a battery's power level. If headlights are dim when turned on at night the battery power level could be very weak and the vehicle should be turned off soon. In addition, the headlights can be checked during the day if the vehicle is equipped with daytime running lights. If the lights dim and brighten upon acceleration or with the use of electrical accessories, the battery could be weak and should be checked by a mechanical professional.

One of the final symptoms of a weak battery is the battery light indicator will turn on, while driving or after starting. If this light comes on after starting and stays on for over five miles, this could indicate problems with the battery or electrical system. In the case that the battery light comes on while driving, the vehicle should be taken to a place where the battery power level can be checked.
