RJ9 is another name for the 4 Position 4 Conductor (4P4C) connector. This connector or adaptor is also referred to as a "handset connector," because of its common use in wired telephone headsets, to connect the ends of the connection cord to a phone's base and its handset. Most customary wired telephones, as well as some pretty high-tech new phones, usually are compatible with RJ9 headsets.
