Carpet cleaning machines, also known as steam cleaners and steam vacuums, dampen carpet with a warm cleaning solution made of water and detergent. They use powerful brushes that rotate and scrub the carpet fibres free of dirt and debris. The machine removes the dirt and cleaning solution, leaving the carpets clean. Consumers gave the highest ratings for carpet cleaning machines based on portability, versatility and performance.

Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge

The Hoover SteamVac with Clean Surge (F5914-900) receives the highest consumer reviews of any carpet cleaning machine rated by Consumer Search, a third-party product review agency. The agency found that consumers were generally satisfied with the results after using the machine, especially given its price. It costs about £97 as of late 2010, which is considered a moderately priced carpet cleaning machine. Moreover, in product tests performed by Consumer Search, the machine produced cleaner carpets and left the carpets less wet compared with other steam cleaners. The SteamVac is equipped with five cleaning brushes and dual tanks to disperse and store the cleaning solution. It also features the clean surge, which directs additional cleaning solution to combat stubborn carpet stains. Consumer Search notes that the one drawback with this machine is that it contains plastic parts, which can break.

Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush

The QuickSteamer PowerBrush (2080) by Bissell gets high marks from Consumer Search. Consumers indicated to Consumer Search that they liked the vacuum because of its affordability, light weight and performance in small areas. As of late 2010, this carpet cleaning machine is offered at about £65, which is on the lower end of the cost spectrum for these products. Consumer Search states that this machine is designed to clean carpeting of small rooms or area rugs. It's less suited for cleaning carpets in larger rooms, as the QuickSteamer is not intended to necessary clean the floors in an entire house. Consumer Search states that downsides to this machine is that it leaves carpets wet, is leak-prone and has a small water tank.

The company reports that the machine offers good suction, 10 cleaning brushes and a 12-inch cleaning path. Among the machine's best features is that it can generate hot water used to remove tough stains from carpets. Furthermore, GALT Home has tested this product and agrees with consumers' high ratings. The 9400 Proheat 2X Select is sold for £129 in late 2010.
