Dozens of different detergent brands are available, most of which appear to have the same basic cleaning abilities. Some brands may have something extra to offer, depending on what you're looking for. One family might be looking for a powerful detergent that can remove pet stains, and another might be looking for a safe detergent to help protect children from poisoning. Read the labels carefully when shopping for detergents.

Gain Washing Powder comes in liquid or powder form, with normal concentration or double concentration. At major department stores such as Walgreens or Kmart, you can buy a 1,478ml bottle for between five to 10 dollars. Gain has also paired up with Febreze to offer several Febreze scents in their detergents.

Tide Detergent also comes in liquid and powder forms, for a comparable price to Gain detergents. Tide also has special detergents such as scent-free, for cold-water laundry loads, with bleach and with baking soda. Tide will probably appeal to users with sensitive skin, users that wash clothes of all colours together, users that like to bleach their white clothes and towels, and users that wash pet-stained or otherwise heavily soiled materials.

Arm and Hammer

Arm and Hammer is known for its effectiveness on tough stains and odours. This detergent comes in liquid or powder, scented or scent-free, and with special options such as baking soda, perfume and dye-free, or for high-efficiency washing machines. You can also buy Arm and Hammer detergent that is paired with fabric softener.

Oxi-Clean offers every cleaning product from laundry stain remover spray to regular liquid detergent. Along with their detergent, Oxi-Clean offers several gels, powders and sprays that can supplement your wash for extra cleaning power.

Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation is a brand known for its natural ingredients, which are still effective on stains and odours. These gentler concoctions can reduce the fears you may have about pets or children being exposed to harsh chemicals. If the product is mishandled, there is less chance a child or pet will be harmed or poisoned by it. Seventh Generation has a variety of scents to choose from and can be bought concentrated if you are worried about it being strong enough to clean to your liking. If you have especially sensitive family members, such as a new baby, special "baby-safe" detergents can be purchased from Seventh Generation. The expensive ingredients make the product typically four to five dollars more expensive per bottle than other name brands.
