Different Ways to Wish a Happy Birthday
Creatively wishing someone happy birthday can add excitement to a common message (happy birthday image by Deborah Durbin from Fotolia.com)

Wishing someone a happy birthday is a time-honoured tradition, but just saying happy birthday sometimes doesn't seem to be enough. If you get tired of saying the same thing time and again, put a creative spin on it. Instead of just telling someone happy birthday when you see him, go out of your way to send a creative happy birthday wish to help make the day seem more special.

Birthday Text

Almost everybody has a cell phone. Send a text message to the birthday girl early on the morning of her birthday--just after midnight, for instance. Write something creative besides just happy birthday. For example, "Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live." Sending the birthday wish by text, as early as possible, gives you the chance to be the first to wish someone happy birthday.

E-mail Birthday Card

Websites let you create and send free birthday e-cards with personalised special messages. Many of them allow you to make the card early and specify the date to send it. Take advantage of this feature to create a card ahead of time so you can be sure you won't forget to wish someone a happy birthday. Most of the websites have cards in a variety of categories, allowing you to customise the card to the recipient. You can further customise the cards with personal messages that are appropriate to your relationship with the recipient. Birthday messages can be romantic, humorous or straightforward, or you could even make up a birthday poem that expresses your feelings. Select a card from a category that best suits the person you're addressing, and then customise it with a message that reinforces the theme.

Different Languages

Make a list of how to say happy birthday in different languages, and then start early and text a happy birthday message in a different language each day before someone's birthday. On the day of his birthday, send a text with a birthday wish in the language he speaks.

Social Networks

Send someone a birthday wish on a social network site they use, such as Facebook or MySpace. Post a big, glittery image with "Happy Birthday, _" that takes up a large amount of space on the recipient's social network site is a good way to wish someone a happy birthday and let others know it's the recipient's birthday as well. Several websites that allow you to create customised birthday graphics to post on social network sites at no charge (see Resources). Consider saying happy birthday in more unusual ways, such as with a birthday joke or a personal message. For example, you can use some humour and say, "I'm thankful for social networking sites that send birthday reminders to all your friends, or I may have forgotten it's your birthday today. Have a happy birthday."

Singing Telegrams

Send a singing telegram to someone's door to wish her a happy birthday. A chicken, duck, cow or clown singing happy birthday can be a surprise and will get a birthday off to a good start.

Video Birthday Wish

Send a DVD happy birthday wish. This is an especially good idea if you live far away from the birthday boy. Gather friends and family and sing happy birthday, and then take turns making personal birthday wishes to the birthday boy or girl.
