Facebook, Myspace and Twitter are growing in popularity, but they aren't the only networking sites available. Much like the local Starbucks, free chatrooms on the Internet are one way for teens to get together and socialise.
321 Teen Chat
321 Teen Chat is easy to navigate and includes both chatrooms and discussion forums. The chatrooms available are teen, general and adult. These chatrooms don't require registration of any kind. As with all chatrooms, don't share your personal information such as address, phone number or e-mail. The forums are heavily moderated and require registration to post, though the topics can be viewed by guests. The teen boards are for teens only. Sharing personal information will result in a ban from the community, and if the moderators there find that you're not 19 years old or younger, you will be banned and the local authorities will be notified for an investigation. According to their site rules, they've prosecuted offenders before.
Kidz World is a friendly site that includes a moderated chat room, discussion forums and games and other forms of entertainment. The biggest celebs and television series are splashed across the main page, making this site one that draws you in. This chat room is only open during specific hours of the day. It's also heavily moderated. Harassment of any kind isn't tolerated. Forums cover random topics such as politics, music, sports as well as roleplay. The moderators here don't tolerate harassment, links, sharing personal information, teasing or cyberbullying.
Teen Chat doesn't require registration for its chatrooms. This site also doesn't have a discussion forum. Chatrooms are categorised by region, age and interest. Teen Chat isn't moderated, so chat at your own risk. Like most places on the Internet, keep your personal information private as you never know whom you're chatting with.
Teen Spot requires registration before you can chat or post in the forums. This site is moderated by a robot, and sometimes by the staff. Chatrooms are categorised by relationship status, interests and general topics. The moderation bot filters out flooding (posting too much at once), cursing, advertising and repeating nicknames. Sometimes the staff will drop by unannounced, so it's good to be on your best behaviour at all times. If there's someone in the chat you don't like, you can "ignore" them. The Teen Spot forums are moderated the same way the chatrooms are. Topics range from video games like World of Warcraft, to sex, drugs, television, fashion and relationships. Sharing personal information isn't allowed.
