Foods to avoid in a candida diet

Updated February 21, 2017

The Candida Diet strives to kill harmful yeast growth in the body, which can cause frequent yeast infections, headaches, constipation and digestive discomfort. The diet eliminates all yeast and yeast-producing foods; some of these foods may be consumed after yeast levels have returned to normal. The Candida Diet also encourages supplements to aid in the destruction of yeast.

Bread and Pasta

Brewer's yeast, which makes breads rise, should be avoided. White bread and pasta should also be avoided, as should rye and oats and breads or other products made with those grains.

Sweets and Sweeteners

Sugar fuels yeast production and must be eliminated to kill yeast in the body. In addition to sugar, avoid honey and maple syrup. Artificial sweeteners, including stevia and sucralose, should also be avoided. Eliminate all chocolate from the diet as well. Cakes, cookies, candy, pies and other sweets should not be consumed while on this diet.

Avoid milk, aged cheese and most other forms of dairy, especially ice cream. However, yoghurt containing healthy probiotics helps to restore the balance of bacteria in the digestive system and is encouraged. Choose plain yoghurt or yoghurt fortified with probiotics.

Fruit contains high amounts of sugars that feed yeast. Avoid all fruits, including apples, oranges, bananas, pears and apricots. Dried fruits should also be avoided, including prunes and raisins.

Spices, Condiments and Preservatives

Cinnamon, pepper and chilli powders should be avoided. However, you may continue to enjoy basil, oregano, thyme and parsley while on the Candida Diet. Vinegar and products containing vinegar, such as mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup should be avoided. Refrain from using salad dressings containing vinegars. You can continue to use apple cider vinegar. Soy sauce should also be eliminated.

Foods containing preservatives, particularly those made with citric acid should be eliminated. According to, if an ingredient is unfamiliar or you cannot pronounce it, you should avoid it.

Coffee should be eliminated from your diet, as well as other caffeinated beverages. Sugary sodas should also be avoided. Eliminate alcohol from your diet, but continue to enjoy caffeine-free herbal tea. Diet drinks contain artificial sweeteners and should be avoided.

Choose olive oil when cooking, and avoid peanut and cottonseed oils. Shortening and margarine should not be consumed while on the Candida Diet.
