Chlorine, the element CI, is a poisonous, gaseous substance that can be corrosive and hazardous to living things. However, when combined with other chemicals, it's also an effective disinfectant, widely used to clean water and other commonly-used materials. While much city water is treated with chlorine to reduce bacterial diseases, the federally-imposed limit on chlorine content in drinking water is 4 parts per million. If you are concerned about the chlorine level in your area, or you prefer to bathe in chlorine-free water, you can install a chlorine-filtering shower head.

Sprite Shower Filters

The shower head manufacturer, Sprite, specialises in shower heads that filter out chlorine. Sprite shower heads use KDF, a metal that converts chlorine into chloride, a harmless substance. Sprite's shower heads also add the mineral salt chlorgon to the water to combat combined forms of chlorine. Typically, you need to change the KDF cartridges once a year, though exact lifespan varies with the water's chlorine content. Sprite's models include the high-output shower head, in either white plastic or brass chrome and the hand-held shower head, in white plastic. As of September 2010, prices ranged from £26 to £35, shipping included. Replacement filters cost £14 to £16, depending on the model.

Organic Excellent KDF Chlorine Filter

Organic Excellent's chlorine-removing shower head also uses KDF for filtration. It delivers water at a high output and has a detachable shower head that fits most standard shower fittings. As of September 2010, it cost £35.7.

Slim-Line Universal Shower Filter

The Slim-Line Universal Shower Filter carries certification from the National Sanitation Foundation. Besides chlorine, it effectively removes dirt and odours. The shower head extends just under 1-1/2 inches and is compatible with most shower head fixtures. The unit includes one cartridge, which lasts approximately 6 months, or 5,000 gallons of water, at which point it can be replaced. The Slim-Line Universal Shower Filter comes in white plastic and features a one-year warranty. As of September 2010, it cost £16.20.

Paragon Rain Shower Head

Paragon's Rain Shower Head combines chlorine-filtration technology with an elegant chrome finish. It features 60 individual nozzles and measures 6 inches across. One filter will last 10,000 gallons. The shower head includes a 10-inch adjustable arm to change the spray angle or move the head up to 20 inches up and down. The filter removes 99 per cent of all chlorine and significantly reduces levels of hydrogen sulphide, lead, arsenic, mercury, iron, calcium carbonate, magnesium, bacteria, fungi, algae, cadmium, chromium and selenium, as well as removing unpleasant odours. The unit cost £37.6 as of September 2010. Replacement filter cartridges are available for £12.90.
