Major car rental companies will not accept what are known as prepaid debit cards, but almost all will accept regular bank-issued debit cards, provided that there are adequate funds in your bank account. Regardless of the rental company, a temporary fee is generally extracted from the renter's bank account, as a means of damage insurance for the company. This fee is credited back upon return of the rental car, as long as it's returned in the same condition it was in when rented.
Alamo rental centres are not only located throughout the U.S., but in multiple countries all over the world (with the exception of China). According to the Alamo website, only debit cards with a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover logo are accepted. In order to use a Visa debit card at an Alamo rental centre, a round trip ticket must be presented to pick up a car. This ticket can take the form of a round trip airline, cruise ship or train ticket. When returning the car, the round trip ticket is no longer necessary. The Visa debit card must also bear the name of the person renting the car at the time of the pickup.
Hertz is another well-known car rental company which is conveniently located in almost every country in the world. Hertz accepts Visa and Mastercard debit cards if the renter possess adequate funds for the rental charges and a £130 ($200) temporary fee. The £130 ($200) fee is meant to cover any damages which may occur during the rental time, and is sent back to the account of the renter, upon return of the car.
While Avis does accept Visa debit cards, renters should be aware that the terms and conditions of renting with Avis in this manner are quite stringent. One of the stipulations is that the cardholder be at least 25 years old. All Visa debit cardholders are subjected to a credit check. A £325 ($500) holding fee is also charged to the renter's account and those funds are credited back, upon satisfactory return of the rental car. (This holding fee return can take as long as two weeks to process). It is also important to note that Avis centres in Canada, the states of Mississippi and Louisiana, the Metropolitan New York Tri-State area and the cites of Hartford and Philadelphia will not accept bank debit cards as payment at all, regardless of the logo on the card.
