A motorcycle jacket keeps you warm and protects you from the wind and rain when riding. But more importantly, in the event of an accident, the right motorcycle jacket could mean the difference between a serious injury or a minor scrape.

Faux Leather

Faux leather motorcycle jackets are made from synthetic materials treated to look like leather. They are lightweight, more flexible, and less expensive than genuine leather jackets. Faux leather jackets do not mildew. They can also be washed or dry-cleaned.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather motorcycle jackets are made from animal hides, usually cow or buffalo. Genuine leather jackets are heavier and more durable than faux leather jackets. However, they are also less supple and more difficult to clean.

A genuine leather motorcycle jacket is more durable than a faux leather jacket. A genuine leather motorcycle jacket will last longer, but a faux leather jacket may look better longer.

The primary purpose of a motorcycle jacket is to protect the rider. A 1986 Munich study showed that riders with proper protective gear (jacket, gloves, helmet and boots) suffer 30 per cent fewer injuries than those without safety apparel.

Some people prefer faux leather motorcycle jackets, while others swear by genuine leather. Either way, choose a jacket that is not too tight or too loose, one that moves easily, and one that provides adequate protection when riding a motorcycle.
