Whether you plan a casual birthday get-together or a sophisticated dinner party, decorated wine glasses provide a festive touch to the occasion. Decorate all the glasses or make a special one just for the birthday celebrant. Send the wine glasses home with each guest as a favour and memento of the occasion.

Etched Glasses

Use a glass etching kit, available at craft stores, to adorn glasses in a theme-appropriate motif. Kits come with stencils or you can purchase stencils that better fit the occasion. Consider balloons, monograms or birthday greetings including the name of the celebrant. Etched glasses provide a sophisticated decoration that is suitable for upscale parties as well as more casual celebrations. You can etch on the base of the glass or on the top portion of the wine glass as desired.

Painted Glasses

Glass paint is usually baked onto glasses so it doesn't chip or fade. Special glass paints are sold at most craft stores. Translucent paints have an appearance similar to stained glass. Opaque paints do not allow any light to pass through and are best used for small designs on the glass or on the base of the wine glass. Choose a basic design for all the glasses and a more ornate design for the birthday celebrant to help her stand apart on her special day.

Charms and Embellishments

Wine charms serve a dual purpose. They help identify who the drink belongs to and allow you to decorate the wine glass in a non-permanent way. Use purchased charms or make your own with beads, charms and wire. The charms fasten around the stem of the wine glass.

As an alternative to charms, wrap a ribbon around the stem of each glass. Stick a miniature birthday present bow to the base of the glass near the stem. Include a small paper tag with the guest's name to finish of the decoration.
