If you're looking for the lawnmower that's received the highest ratings overall, regardless of mower style or brand, a number of consumer-oriented reviewers can offer explanations of their very top picks. The Consumer Search website offers an across-the-board list of the best lawnmowers; the site culls its review information from a number of well-known sources, including Consumer Reports, Popular Mechanics, Good Housekeeping and other niche review publications, online and in print.

Toro e-Cycler

According to Consumer Search, Toro's e-Cycler is the best cordless electric lawnmower you can buy. The mower is powered by a 36-volt battery. It cuts extremely evenly compared with most mowers, and is adjustable up to a maximum height of 4 inches. In addition, the e-Cycler's mulching function works well, it starts up smoothly and has a quiet overall operation. Of its disadvantages, the e-Cycler is fairly heavy and has a complicated height adjustment control.

Honda HRX217K2HXA

Honda's HRX217K2HXA model qualifies as the best self-propelled gas-powered lawnmower, according to Consumer Search. In addition, J.D. Power and Associates recognised Honda as the all-around best walk-behind lawnmower manufacturer in 2010. It runs quietly and is fairly efficient. The mower is CARB-certified for having low emissions. Features include a variable cruise-control function, mulching and bagging options and a brake that stops the blade without interrupting the motor. However, Honda's gas-powered leader has a handle that some testers found too long, it produces a discharge at the rear and some found its self-propelled movement too slow.

Toro Recycler 20332

Listed by Consumer Search as the best budget mower, the Toro Recycler 20332 features a peppy maximum speed as well as a "personal pace" drive. Testers found it was easy to switch between modes when operating the Toro Recycler. Among its disadvantages, the Recycler doesn't have a blade brake and its mulching function received mixed reviews from testers. Tall testers found the handle uncomfortably short.

Lawn-Boy 10645

Awarded the "best gas push mower" distinction by Consumer Search, the Lawn-Boy 10645 features an above-average mulching function. Its side-discharging operation is excellent and comes with an optional chute. Among the mower's weak points, it did not show the same level of reliability as other tested models. Also, the steel deck structure showed itself to be prone to rust. Like many of the tested mowers, the Lawn Boy's height adjustment controls were complicated and somewhat difficult to use.
