If you enjoy medieval style home decor, and you want to create that feeling in your home, you do not need to go to an interior decorator for the planning. You can create a beautifully decorated medieval style home customised to your preferences yourself, with a few ideas to start your creative thinking.

Furnish your home with roughly made and dark-stained wooden furniture. Wooden furniture from the medieval time period had a more industrial and bulky look than a decorative look. Choose dark stain to finish pine furniture. Use wrought iron either alone or in combination with wood pieces. Choose wrought iron items with pointed arches and curled ends. Use bright colours in deep hues for any upholstery on the furniture. Use luxurious fabrics like crushed velvet or an ornately detailed tapestry fabric.

Walls And Floors

Use a wallpaper or faux finish to create a castle-style wall treatment to look like stone walls. Create the same effect on the floor with a stone tile or marbled stone slab. Use area rugs to soften the room and make it more cosy feeling. Choose Persian-style rugs in deep reds, golds and blacks with scenes of knights and kings or a fancy pattern or design to keep the theme medieval.

Window Treatments

Use wrought iron curtain rods to hang drapery. Choose drapery made with the same types of luxurious velvets and tapestry fabric for chairs and cushions. Over the drapery hang chains for an added medieval detail. If the cost isn't a problem for you, install some stained glass windows to add a cathedral-style light source with added privacy. The stained glass windows will replace the need for any modern-looking blinds or shutters to keep the theme going all over the room.

Choose knick-knacks like bookends, candlestick holders, paper weights and decorative figures that keep with the theme. Choose items made of pewter or iron. Interesting pieces can be found at many speciality shops in the form of miniature guillotines, dragons and balls-and-chains. Choose chandelier-shaped wrought iron candle holders, which can be hung or placed on a stand for burning.
