Ubuntu is an open source operating system based on Debian, which is a GNU/Linux operating system. According to its website, the company's goal is to make open source software both accessible and usable for everyone. In keeping this goal,

Ubuntu is free and supports printers from the major printer manufacturers and many smaller ones as well. Information and drivers for supported printers and printer combination products can be found at Ubuntu.com. (See Resource section.)

Brother

Drivers are available for most Brother printers. Drivers and a help document are available from its website, Brother-usa.com; look for information on Devian drivers. There also are drivers available for combination printer/scanners. Information also can be found on the Ubuntu website.

Canon

Most Canon printers are compatible with Ubuntu and have Linux drivers. There are specific instructions for downloading drivers for the following Canon printers: Pixma iP2200, Pixma iP1500, Pims iP4200, Canon CAPT, LBP1315kgP3010, Pixmus i550 and Pixus 560i. Other Canon printers may operate on the available drivers, but may not be directly supported, according to information from the Ubuntu community support.

Dell

The following Dell printers have functional drivers that will run on Ubuntu. Dell.com lists download drivers for 1130n, 530dn, P713W, V313W, V515W, V715W, V313AIO, Photo P513W, 1144, 2230D, 3335dn, 3333dn and V505AIO printers.

Hewlett-Packard

Hewlett-Packard, or HP, printers and all-in-one printers have several compatible drivers listed on Ubuntu. Hewlett-Packard is a Ubuntu and Linux partner. You can locate information on a variety of Ubuntu drivers on the HP.com website. There also is a forum on the website for programmers and computer professionals.

Lexmark

Ubuntu-compatible drivers for Lexmark printers and multifunction printers are available for download from the Lexmark.com website. Use Linux as a part of your search terms to locate the appropriate downloads.
