There are several design ideas that you can follow to create a sun, moon and star cake theme. If you enjoy cake decorating, you will need to buy the necessary supplies to create your design. Or you can hire a cake decorator or a bake shop to create the design. Provide the decorator with a sketch of the design you want or at least a written description of how you want it to look.

Space Design

A terrific premise for a cake design involving the sun, moon and stars is a space exploration theme. For example, a cake design that has an Apollo capsule or the Space Shuttle as the centrepiece on the cake with the sun, moon and stars as the backdrop can be a wonderful idea for a child or for an adult who is a enthusiast of the space program and perhaps watched the first Apollo mission launch.

Nursery Rhyme

Another idea is to create a scene from the famous nursery rhyme "The Cow Jumped Over The Moon." This theme idea for a birthday cake can be a marvellous idea for a child that loves this nursery rhyme read at bedtime. Of course, there is generally not a sun included in this imagery, but you can, for instance, add a smiling gold "sun" to the barn door. Or the sun could be just starting to peek up over the horizon.

Three Dimensional Cake Design

Another idea for a truly unusual cake design is to create a three dimensional sun, moon and stars. Cut the shapes for the objects you want to add from a separate piece of cake. Place them where you want them in the arrangement and use frosting to cover them and the rest of the cake. A black cake frosting sprinkled with white candy sprinkles to act as stars is the perfect backdrop for your three dimensional objects. A great way to add embellishments is to place small toy space craft or astronauts floating on the surface of your cake.
