The Best Lawn Trimmers & Edgers

Updated February 21, 2017

The choice between electric and gas trimmers and edgers is determined by the size of your lawn. Electric trimmers and edgers are less expensive than gas powered ones; however, you are limited in the area they cover by the length of your extension cord(s) or, in the case of rechargeable edgers and trimmers by the battery life.

Best Edgers

The TBE515 Portable Edger (manufactured by Troy Bilt), according to the Galt website is a highly rated gas powered lawn edger priced under £130. Equipped with an ergonomic handle with throttle control and an edging depth of 3 1/2 inches, the 9 inch dual tip steel blade allows for easy lawn trimming. Galt also rated the Troy Bilt Echo PE 200 a great buy that includes a best of the market five-year consumer warranty. A popular model and top seller electric edger is the Black & Decker Edge Hog 2-in-1 Landscape Edger with a three-position blade depth. It also has a 2 1/4 horsepower motor, durable steel blade and adjustable handle.

Best Trimmers

According to the Ace Hardware website, the top five best selling lawn trimmers are the Yard-Machines Curved Shaft Gas Trimmer, the Black & Decker AFS Electric Trimmer, the Black & Decker Cordless String Trimmer, the Lehr Propane Curved Shaft Detachable String Trimmer and the Lehr Propane Straight Shaft Detachable String Trimmer, all consumer rated at 3 1/2 stars. String trimmers are the preferred lawn trimmer because they are easy to use, and can cut around shrubs, posts, rocks and such with no damage to the trimmer.

Best Combination Trimmer/Edger Unit

Black & Decker is probably the most prominently known tool manufacturer in retail. Consumer Digest rated the Black & Decker 18V Cordless String Trimmer & Edger the 2009 Best Buy for a cordless string trimmer, according to the Black & Decker website. Features include the Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) which eliminates the need for the “bump” action, and the Groom N’Edge which easily converts the trimmer to an edger. The Galt website states that the American Gardener Yardstick 10-inch 24-volt Cordless Edger and Trimmer has decent ratings with some five-star consumer ratings.
