After the milestone sweet 16 birthday party, turning 17 seems slightly uneventful and unexciting. In fact, some teens may be tempted to forgo an elaborate birthday party for a more subdued celebration. Whether you want a big party or a simple celebration, do not allow your birthday to simply fly under the radar. Instead, celebrate your 17th year with a sweet 17 all-girl party.

Girls' Day Out

For the teen who loves to bounce from one activity to the next, an energetic and fun-filled birthday party is necessary. If your budget allows, hire a limousine to chauffeur the birthday girl and a few of her closest friends around town for the day. If your budget does not allow for the extra expense, find a friend or family member with a "fun" car and ask him to drive the girls around for a few hours. Begin the day at a shopping mall, where the birthday girl and her friends can peruse the shops for fabulous finds. After a few hours of shopping, the girls hop back into the limousine and head to lunch at the birthday girl's favourite restaurant. Choose a casual and laid-back restaurant that won't mind a group of giggling girls. Once everyone has been sufficiently fed, finish the party by catching a movie at the theatre or renting an old favourite movie to watch at home.

Girls' Night In

Rather than spending the day bouncing around town, some teen girls prefer celebrating their birthdays with close friends at home. With a bit of time and creativity, you can easily turn this simple party theme into a chic and sophisticated affair. The birthday girl should invite only a handful of her closest friends to her home for a birthday spa party and sleepover. The girls can create their own face masks, hair masks and body scrubs using common ingredients, as explained at the Spa Index website. Provide cucumber slices for them to place on their eyes and plenty of towels to wipe up the messes. Since the girls will be using the bathtub, shower or sink quite a bit, prepare for a slightly messy bathroom by the end of the night. Once they are finished with facials and spa treatments, provide plenty of fashion and celebrity magazines, movies and board games for the rest of the night.

Fashion Design Party

If your 17-year-old is a fashion fanatic, a fashion design birthday party may be the perfect party for her. Ultimately, there are two ways to approach a fashion design party. For the first method, ask each party guest to bring an old item of clothing she wishes to revamp. For the second method, simply provide party guests with yards of various fabrics from which to create an outfit. Provide scissors, sewing kits, buttons, zippers, ribbons, fabric glue, rhinestones, fabric dye, fabric scraps and other items that can be used to embellish an article of clothing. If few of the girls have sewing experience, a few adults might volunteer to fill the job. Give the girls a time frame to complete their design. Once the time is up, each girl presents her design. Various awards can be given, such as awards for most creative, most glamorous and wildest outfit.
