Thirteen-year-olds have just emerged from their preteen years and will definitely scorn "childish" birthday party decorations. Thus, you want the party to have a celebratory feel without offending the honoree's sensibilities. With a bit of creativity, you can decorate in a way that will not only please the honoree, but awe her friends.

Glow in Dark

If your 13-year-old wants to create a unique feel for her party, you may want to consider buying glow-in-the-dark decorations and keeping the lights as low as possible. You can cover the ceiling with glowing star stickers, place some LED mood lamps on the table and even serve drinks with lighted ice cubes. You can even hang a small disco ball from the ceiling over the centre of the table. As guests enter the party, they can receive glow-in-the-dark necklaces and sunglasses, as well as miniature flashlights. Kids will love the unique look of these decorations.

Sports Spectacular

If your teenager loves sports, consider decorating your home to match his favourite sport--or several different sports. You can use a hula hoop and storebought netting to make gigantic basketball hoops to hang at either end of the party room. Buy beach balls that look like basketballs, and hang them from the ceiling or from the two hoops, and make the rest of the decorations orange. You could also make a baseball diamond out of the party table. Simply cover it with a large green tablecloth, using white tape on top of thicker brown tape to make the running lines, and four white squares of construction paper or a cut white tablecloth to make the bases. You could also cover the cake in the centre of the table with a large upside-down bowl to make a pitcher's mound.

Balloons and Beyond

Although 13-year-olds don't enjoy many cutesy decorations at their birthday parties, they will usually appreciate some helium balloons to set the tone. Rather than simply scattering them around the ceiling, however, tie them into bunches and weigh them down with something heavy before placing them in corners of the room. To make the party location obvious, and to awe your guests before they even step inside, you may want to make the effort to build a balloon arch in front of your door. Just tie helium balloons to a long string, and attach the ends of the string to objects on either side of the doorway.
