Halloween is a spooky celebration that occurs once a year. People create traditions that help bring excitement to the holiday, including planning the experience of a haunted house. If you are planning to create a haunted house for your party guests or for trick-or-treaters this Halloween, you will need a host of scary props. Scary Halloween props are available for all budget types.

Bubbling Cauldron

The witch's cauldron is a popular scary prop for Halloween decorations. You can create this effect with a large black cast-iron pot, green LED lights and dry ice. Place the LED lights at the bottom of your cast-iron pot. Take a medium-size bowl and fill it with dry ice. Be sure to use gloves when handling the dry ice. Cover the ice with water, pushing the ice under with a spatula if necessary. Put the bowl inside the cast-iron cauldron. A smoky mist will bubble up, creating a spooky glow.

Fake Blood

Rubber knives dripping with fake blood are a great option for your Halloween props. You can place the knives in window sills or in a large doll lying alone in a corner. Use red food colouring and heavy corn syrup to achieve this affect. This is an inexpensive alternative to purchasing fake blood from a costume shop. The result will be a brighter red than professional fake blood, so place the prop in a dimly lit area to give it a more realistic look.

Mouse in Mousetrap

Purchase a fake mouse and place him in a mousetrap in a well-lit area of your haunted house. This detail won't be noticed by everyone, but those who do recognise this subtle prop will jump back in fear at the unexpected dead animal. Other animals can be used, but fake mice with fur usually look very authentic and are easy to find.

Ghost Illusions

If your budget allows, you can purchase a ghost illusions projector from a Halloween retailer in your area. Ghost projectors can make an apparition appear to be rising from a grave outside your home or walking through an attic in your home. Set up a screen, bed sheet or white plastic vapour barrier so that your projections show clearly when set up.
