The key to decorating a Christmas buffet table is to use tall pieces that stand out among the colourful dishes and take up as little table room as possible. Tall and thin decorations use vertical space to catch the eye and preserve horizontal space for the meal selections. Candlesticks, vases and cake stands are popular centrepiece bases for buffet tables. Other table decorations can include tablecloths, table garlands and individual dish adornments.

Snowy candles

Combine glitter, candles and glass candlesticks to create a snowy Christmas centrepiece for a buffet table. Three tall, clear glass candlesticks provide the base for the design. Clear glitter covers each tapered white candle to create an icy effect. A white satin ribbon wraps around the middle of the three filled candle holders and ties in a bow in the front.

A light sprinkle of clear glitter over the clustered candle holders adds a hint of shine to the overall design. Positioning the centrepiece on a round mirror platter sprinkled with glitter adds a bold burst of shine to the overall design. The centrepiece pairs well with white or silver tablecloths and glittering snowflake garlands draped around the sides of the table.

Colourful gift bouquet

Use a tall and thin cardboard box to create a gift-themed stand for a floral Christmas centrepiece. Dry beans fill the cardboard box to make the base heavy, and red wrapping paper covers the box for a sharp look. Green ribbon wraps around each side and ties in a large bow on the box top for a gift appearance.

A spiky bouquet with white-tipped ivy, red roses, pink roses, yellow roses and baby's breath attaches to the middle of the bow on top of the box and spills down the sides. This centrepiece works well on a buffet table covered with a black, white, pink, yellow or green tablecloth.

Sparkling Table

If you prefer a Christmas buffet table without centrepieces, try decorating the sides of the table to add festive cheer. A long red tablecloth over any table can serve as a base for the design. A thick, gold-edged, red velvet ribbon wraps around the upper sides of the table and ties in a bow for a subtle accent to the tablecloth.

Small evergreen and twisted gold wire wreaths dangling from the velvet ribbon at 10 cm (4-inch) intervals create a hint of colour around the table. A strand of clear beads draped through the middle of each wreath provides delicate detail to the decoration. A light coat of gold glitter over the top of the table complements the wreaths and adds a little sparkle to the spaces between the serving dishes.
