A 21st birthday party is one of the most important birthday parties you will ever celebrate. This birthday signals your entry into full adulthood, the ability to drink adult beverages and enter into an adult career with appropriate pay. It also often signals that college graduation is near, meaning the future is just a few steps away. Celebrate your 21st birthday with as much energy as possible so you'll always remember this important event.

Decorations

If you're planning your party at a hotel, spa or local pub decorations are already done. However, if you want to party at home with a small group of friends and family, deck out your house for optimum fun. Hang up tons of movie, band and art posters you and your friends love; cover the walls in them if possible. Let iridescent balloons float up against the ceiling and rent a bubble machine for the evening. You may also combine bubbles and fog to add a little more excitement to the atmosphere. Make sure there's plenty of seating, like floor pillows and bean bag chairs, along with plenty of space for dancing and games.

Activities

Young women may enjoy a night of pampering themselves with home manicures and pedicures, facials, hair styling and make-up. Young men might enjoy basketball or street hockey tournaments. Both young men and women could play paintball (substitute paint-filled balloons for balls if you don't have guns), Twister or have a Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution tournament. There should be plenty of popular music for dancing.

Most 21 year olds enjoy drinking games. Watch a favourite movie and take a drink every time something explodes in an action flick or whenever a monster pops out of nowhere in a horror film. You can also play a modified version of Charades; the losing team must have a double-shot each round.

Food

Food is a must at a 21st birthday party. Stick with tried and true snack foods like wings, hot dogs, burgers and various kinds of meat, fruit, and veggie kebabs. Snack crackers and chips with dip are also a sensible option as you get them in bulk. Provide some healthy alternatives, too with homemade tomato bruschetta, and fruit and cheese platters.

Most 21st birthday parties also involve a large amount of alcohol. If you're a first time drinker, get a few different kinds of beer and flavoured liquor. Have one or two mixed drinks or shooters at the beginning of the evening and then stick to one drink to avoid illness. Also provide lots of water to stave off hangovers. Don't overdo it; if you feel sick, stop. Feel free to cut off any of your friends that seem like they've had too much, also. You can start drinking again when you sober up a bit.
