If you want to throw a nautical theme party, you'll need to know the ropes. Be a first-rate party host by tailoring each element of your party to a sea and sailing-based theme. Batten down the hatches and give your guests a theme party to remember.

Encourage your guests to dress up as if they're about to set out to sea. Guests can dress up in classic sailor apparel, including navy blue and white-striped clothing adorned with images of anchors. Sailors were some of the first people to tattoo themselves, discovering the art in Southeast Asia. Provide your guests with temporary tattoos to apply. Classic nautical tattoo images include anchors, sparrows, stars and palm trees, each of which signify a different milestone or concept to a sailor. For example, a sailor might get a nautical star to serve as a symbol of finding his way.

Food for a nautical party lends itself to seafood-based cuisine. Offer your guests a selection of appetizers and dishes that a sailor might eat. Prepare oysters, lobster, crab, mussels and any other type of seafood. For guests who don't enjoy seafood, provide traditional party fare with a nautical theme. For example, order a pizza with anchovies that guests can pick off if they so desire.

Location and Decorations

You can throw a nautical-themed party by the sea or within the comfort of your home. Consider hosting your party on a boat, dock or at the beach. You can choose any body of water as the setting for a nautical-themed party, even a small pond. If you wish to host the party at home, bring the sea home with you. Set the table with a navy blue and white tablecloth. Tie ropes and white sheets around railings. Place life preservers and anchor decorations on the walls. Create the illusion that you're at the sea or on a boat.
