Whether you're going green or you just like the rustic look, you can use recycled or reclaimed barn boards to decorate a wide range of spaces in your home. You can use barn boards in a decorative fashion for almost any project where a normal board is used, including shelves, craft projects and other decorative pieces. Don't use old barn boards for architectural support, in case the board is weak. Purchase kiln-dried barn wood. Kiln drying kills bugs.

Warm the Floors

Add a touch of warmth to your floors by installing old barn boards on the space instead of traditional hardwood. Rough barn boards offer a weathered quality for a rustic look; or get a more traditional look by purchasing reclaimed lumber made from barn boards. Barn boards usually vary in colour, which might appear obvious after the wood is installed.

Cover the Walls

If you love your floors just the way they are, use your barn wood to cover the walls. You can use barn board the same way you do plank panelling or wainscoting to cover a wall. Barn boards will require nails instead of adhesive to attach them to the wall, but the boards add both decor and a little additional insulation against winter or summer weather. In most cases, you'll only want to cover a wall or two of a room with barn boards. An entire room covered in barn board can appear too dark.

Add Architectural Details

Although you don't want your barn boards to serve any true architectural purpose, you can add architectural details to your home using barn boards. Create the look of wooden ceiling beams with barn boards. Construct window trim or moulding from old barn boards, or make a rail for a stairway or other open space, such as a balcony. Create built-in shelves from barn boards for a bit of rustic appeal.

Create Unusual Pieces

Decor doesn't end at the remodelling stage. Create unusual pieces as decor elements, keepsakes or gifts. Create a chair or make a frame from old barn boards. You can use old pieces of wood to create crates, dishes and a variety of other unusual pieces for your home. To add a more modern flair to the old barn board look, mix it with something unusual, such as copper countertops or bold-coloured walls.
