A royal party theme can be used for a variety of events, including birthdays, awards dinners and formal dances. It is particularly effective for parties where guests will be dressed up, as the additional formality adds to the royal decor. As you plan the decorations for a royalty themed party, consider centrepieces, chair decorations and wall hangings.

On each table, set the atmosphere for a royal theme party by making luxurious centrepieces. For a literal take on royalty, you can use small, glittering tiaras looped around candles or bouquets of flowers. If you are throwing a fun, lighthearted party, you might include small crowns for each guest to wear during the evening. To create a warm, soft lighting scheme that plays up the metallic and velvet textures around the room, use candles in varying sizes. White and silver candles make a bright and elegant royal setting, while rich reds, greens, and purples set a more serious royal tone. If your budget allows, use tall, dramatic flowers that feel rich. At Christmas, you can use a combination of evergreen branches, candles, and gold and silver ornaments for a traditional look.

Chair Decorations

For parties that involve formal dining, you can make royal chair decorations to add to the feeling of the evening. Make or order chair skirts in deep colours or metallic fabrics, and tie large, lavish bows around the back of each chair for added effect. For a wedding or party with a guest of honour, make one or two armchairs into thrones, and use thick, luxurious fabric to cover them. Consider draping the back of each throne chair with a piece of soft fake fur. If you have the space, you can raise the throne chairs on a platform so that they are more elevated than other chairs in the room.

Wall Hangings

To create the feeling of a castle in your party space, focus on richly coloured wall hangings. You can make your own wall hangings by buying large strips of thick velvet in dark, jewel-toned colours. Deep greens, maroons, reds, golds and purples all suggest royalty. Keep the top part of the fabric straight and cut an inverted V shape into the bottom edge. On top of the velvet base, you can use brocade or metallic fabrics to create a crest of arms, spell out sayings or make abstract designs. Fold the top edge over and sew to create a space for a thin dowel to pass through; tie the ends of a gold or silver rope to each end of the dowel to create a hanger. For the feeling of a royal banquet hall, hang the velvet banners along the wall and behind the main table.
