Message ideas for 18th birthday cards
An 18-year-old may be graduating high school soon. Mention your pride in his achievements. (happy graduate image by Leticia Wilson from

A new 18-year-old in the United States has many new responsibilities and laws to consider, some good and some bad, since he is now legally considered an adult. Think of a message for the card marking this milestone birthday that reflects one of these many changes. Good changes deserve congratulations and best wishes, while some of the more serious aspects of adulthood make for jokey card messages to lighten the mood.

Usually, an 18th birthday coincides with other major events such as graduating from high school and starting college. If the 18-year-old in your life has big events coming up in the near future, use the birthday card to mention these milestones. Write something that reflects your admiration for his moving forward with grace and how his life has really just begun.

The United States considers an 18-year-old an adult. In your birthday card message to him, mention something about being able to vote, own a gun, get a tattoo, get married or other advantages of adulthood. You could also joke about the drawbacks of being an adult, such as jury duty and taxes, in the message.

Not 21

While his 18th birthday brings many new advantages and disadvantages, some things still remain the same for an 18-year-old in the United States. In your birthday message, joke that he has three more years until he reaches "real" adulthood at the age of 21. You might mention that although he can buy a car legally, he can't rent one yet. You could also remind him that he will have to wait for that first legal drink.
