The 4.6 litre Ford engine has been around since 1991 when it was installed in the 1991 Lincoln Town Car. Since that start, the 4.6 has been put in nearly every full-sized Ford, Mercury and Lincoln car, truck and SUV. There are three versions of the 4.6 litre produced through the years; two-valve, three-valve and four-valve.
The two-valve engine was released in 1991 and is still installed in F-series trucks and E-series vans. The specifications varied depending on the year and application. The 4.6 litre two-valve engine is in the following full-sized models: 1992 to 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis Ford Crown Victoria (215 to 239 HP/270 to 280ft-lbs of torque), 1991 to 2004 Lincoln Town Car (190 HP to 239 HP/260ft-lbs of torque), 1994 to 1997 Ford Thunderbird/Mercury Cougar (205 HP/265 to 280ft-lbs of torque), 1999 to 2004 Ford Mustang (215 to 260 HP/285 to 302ft-lbs of torque), 1997 to present Ford F-series (225 HP/248 to 294ft-lbs of torque), 1997 to present Ford E-series vans (225 HP/286ft-lbs of torque), 2002 to 2005 Ford Explorer (239 HP/282ft-lbs of torque) and 2004 to present Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (250 HP/287ft-lbs of torque.)
The three-valve version of the 4.6 litre Ford engine was first installed in the 2005 Ford Mustang. This version included a Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) and three valves per cylinder. This version is only installed on a few models of Fords; 2005 to present Ford Mustang (300hp/320ft-lbs of torque), 2006 to present Ford Explorer (292 HP/300ft-lbs of torque), 2007 to present Ford Explorer Sport Trac (292 HP/300ft-lbs of torque) and 2009 Ford F-series (292 HP/320ft-lbs of torque.)
The four-valve 4.6 litre engine is the most powerful 4.6 litre engine made by Ford. This version of the 4.6 is a double overhead cam (DOHC) and has four valves per cylinder. The most powerful of the bunch is the supercharged version installed in the 2003 to 2004 Mustang SVT. The complete list of models and the specs is as follows: 1993 to 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII (280 HP/285ft-lbs of torque), 1995 to 1997 Lincoln Continental (260 HP/265ft-lbs of torque), 1996 to 1998 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra (305 HP/300ft-lbs of torque), 1997 to 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC (290 HP/290ft-lbs of torque), 1998 to 2002 Lincoln Continental (275 HP/275ft-lbs of torque), 1999 to 2001 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra (320 HP/317ft-lbs of torque), 2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1 (305 HP/320ft-lbs of torque), 2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1 (310 HP/335ft-lbs of torque), 2003 to 2004 Mercury Marauder (302 HP/318ft-lbs of torque), 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator (302 HP/318ft-lbs of torque) and 2003-2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Supercharged (390 HP/390ft-lbs of torque.)
