Archery is the sport of shooting an arrow from a bow. Initially, hunters used this weapon to strike down an animal from a distance. Archers were also used in warfare to kill some enemy forces before hand-to-hand combat became necessary. In recent years, archery has become a popular competitive recreational activity. Archery clubs are popular throughout the United Kingdom, and the English county of Essex has several clubs dedicated to the sport.
