A Sea Port clerical officer typically works at a marine port or "port of call" station in which marine vessels, ranging from commercial cruise ships to cargo ships, dock for a period of time or use as a base marine station. There are many areas which a clerical officer can be assigned to with standard operating procedures to follow as a technical manual or guide for the officer to perform their duties.

Administrative Duties

The administrative duties for the clerical officer can be very diverse. The individual keeps a log of all marine vessels, docking times and vessel types (commercial or cargo) stationed at port. According to standard operating procedures, the officer must also create shift rosters for employees and ensure that safety procedures are followed when vessels are in a state of "dry dock". Duties include the use of computers to establish activity logs.

Logistics Management

If a clerical officer is assigned to a logistics port of call, the individual has the responsibility to oversee cargo operations. Standard operating procedures include procedures for receiving and checking bill of lading for cargo shipments, establishing transfer reports for cargo being transferred to land vessels.

This area can be an organisation or standalone vessel at a port. Maintenance procedures address facilities management concerning physical security of resources, establishing and recording maintenance requests from other units within the organisation or for a vessel.
