Whether your skin is tan from the sun, a tanning booth or a spray, you are never stuck with the colour. There are many different things you can try to lighten or altogether remove a tan. Best of all, you don't need to seek out any special products to lighten your skin because most of the time the things you need are already tucked away in your cupboards.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is highly acidic, which makes it an excellent natural ingredient for lightening tan skin. You can swab lemon juice on skin with a washcloth or cut a lemon in half and rub the fruit directly onto the skin. Let the lemon juice soak for 15 to 20 minutes, rinse off and moisturise your skin with lotion. Other citrus fruits such as lime and orange also lighten the skin.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation can help get rid of tan skin because it removes the surface layer of skin cells. This surface layer is easily removed with gentle friction because these skin cells are already dead. Sometimes you may need to do multiple rounds of exfoliation to remove tan skin if the colour has penetrated beyond your top layer of skin. Exfoliation can be done with a loofah in the shower with soap. Just use the loofah instead of a sponge and scrub your skin gently in a circular motion. Be careful not to exfoliate excessively; otherwise you may irritate your skin.

There are also many natural substances that you can use as a scrub to exfoliate the skin. Salt and sugar work well for this purpose. They can be mixed with lemon juice or honey to make a natural body scrub. The scrub can be used alone or in conjunction with a loofah to remove tan skin.

Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Alpha hydroxy acid can help remove tan skin because it promotes cell turnover. When new cells are produced the top surface layer of dead skin cells will shed revealing a new, less tan, layer of skin. Alpha hydroxy acid can be found in bath and body products such as lotions, body washes, facial cleansers, masks and creams.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can fade a tan. The baking soda helps detoxify skin. You can use baking soda two different ways to fade tan skin: either make a paste of baking soda and water and use a loofah to scrub the areas of the body that are tan, or add 1 cup of baking soda to a bathtub filled three-quarters of the way and soak for 20 to 30 minutes.
