As you get older, taking care of your hair can be even more important than when you were younger.

As men age, stress, a decrease in testosterone production, medication and genetics can often manifest in hair loss and less healthy hair. However, there are simple hair care tips that can keep your hair looking its best and possibly even encourage growth as you age.

Know Your Hair Type

Everyone has a different hair type and this dictates the types of products you should use on your hair. Most hair falls into five types; dry, oily, thick, thin and curly. Determining your hair type is fairly simple, and can be determined by how it feels to you. Thankfully, finding hair products to match your hair type is very simple. Almost every hair product available for purchase is labelled to be used for a specific hair type. Simply match your hair type to the product.

Shampooing is incredibly important to your hair care process. While some hair loss prevention websites say the act of shampooing can increase hair loss, not washing your hair can cause dirt build-up which clogs hair follicles and further discourages hair growth, so regularly shampooing your hair is very important. Before you shampoo your hair, use a wide-tooth comb to untangle your hair. Wet your hair completely in warm water and apply the shampoo. Massage the shampoo into your hair and across your scalp. Rinse completely and thoroughly as excess shampoo left can clog hair follicles, which keeps hair from growing.

Some men are not used to using conditioner, but it can help with overall hair health. During colder weather, it can also keep your scalp moisturised and protected. Choose a conditioner suited to your hair type, if your hair is thinning, a conditioner designed to be lightweight and add volume will give the appearance of more and thicker hair. Apply the conditioner after shampooing, working it into your hair and scalp. Rinse very thoroughly. Like shampoo, if conditioner is not completely rinsed out it can clog hair follicles and keep hair from growing.

Preventing Hair Loss

If you are already experiencing hair loss, hair products with minoxidil can help reduce hair loss and possibly stimulate hair growth. Stress is also a major factor in hair loss due to loss of vitamins and minerals. To help get some of these vitamins and minerals back in your body, blend together a smoothie made with banana, honey, yoghurt and lowfat milk.
