Brain games are helpful for developing and maintaining strategic thinking skills. Pencil games that focus the attention on activities other than looking at a monitor help stimulate brain activity. Sitting at a desk, one can play a variety of games to break the monotony of the day's work while refreshing the mind and keeping those thinking skills sharp.
Body Movement Tricks
The simple act of moving two body parts in opposite directions at the same time is a brain game. Rubbing your stomach while patting your head is a game many remember from childhood, and still isn't easy to do. Try other body movements such as moving wrists in opposite directions, then the same direction, then opposite. Do the same with ankles. Stretching and moving activities also offer a break from sitting in the same position and concentrating on a work project for long periods. A simple movement game can be refreshing and increase concentration to continue the work day.
Computer or electronic games can be more than blasting space aliens or breaking through an imaginary wall of bricks. Online games include guessing games, matching or sequencing exercises and puzzles. Familiar card games and word puzzle games online will also work the brain, especially if the player strives to continue to more difficult levels. Hand-held games also provide a variety of interests and playing levels. Online and hand-held electronic games help keep eye-hand coordination skills sharp as well. (See Resource section for some online games.)
Word puzzle books are available for crosswords, missing words or numbers, word searches, sudoku games and other brain games (see Resource section). A puzzle game desk calendar provides a new game every day for a quick brainteaser activity. For a more challenging paper game, consider designing a sudoku, crossword or word search game using your own number or word choices.
Wire rings to untangle, 3-D jigsaw puzzles, a variety of twisting cubes and different peg games are just a few of the types of desk gadgets that are available on the market. These brain games can occupy the mind while providing a break in a stressful day.
While sitting at a desk, think of some recall activities that pertain to your own life. Try to remember the "to-do" list that your wife, husband or boss has prepared. Recall the last thing you said to the kids before you left the house that day. Retell a joke to yourself that you heard at work recently. Name three clients from the day before, as well as something distinctive about them. Recall the wording on a plaque that hangs inside the workplace doors or in a break area.
