It can be difficult for teens and preteens to find decor that matches their interests and taste as they grow out of childhood decorations. Gothic, medieval and punk girls, and all young women, often have limited resources, time and funding to decorate their bedrooms. Both online and in-store options are available for the goth, medieval or punk girl willing to put in a little creativity and time to her bedroom decor.

Gothic

The gothic revival that occurred in the 18th century remains popular today. The aesthetic includes dark themes such as death, night, moonlight, horror and Edgar Allan Poe. Gothic also includes an air of romanticism. Flowing drapes and rich textures often accompany the theme. For bedding, deep shades such as crimson, black and purple are good places to start. Gothic designs range widely from images of cathedrals to the moon and the occult such as vampires and witches. Decorating the walls in a gothic theme is affordable and it should only take a day or two to paint or decorate your walls. Gothic colours are similar to the bedding, but there are also decals with trees, moons and other gothic themes that you can attach to the walls. Gothic accessories are a great way to complete the theme in a girl's bedroom. Including candles with elaborate holders (never left unattended), richly textured furniture, velvet throws and gothic art or posters can help bring the theme to life.

Punk

The punk aesthetic came from an era of rebellion. Punks often made and altered their clothing with safety pins and patches. The aesthetic still includes the safety pins with plaid, skulls and the British flag, called the Union Jack. Punk girls may want to continue the DIY tradition of punk and alter their bedding, with parental consent. Large safety pins can be added to a comforter featuring skulls or the Union Jack. Punk posters play a large part in the punk tradition. Papering the walls with posters of favourite bands is a great way to get a little more punk rock in your bedroom. Punk is a movement and a music tradition. Stand-alone skulls are sold in many different colours and the instruments you play in your punk band are great accents for your punk bedroom.

Medieval

The medieval theme is romantic and conjures up the image of Guinevere and the Knights Templar. The theme often includes knights, castles, religious elements such as angels, rosaries and crosses and Celtic-themed crosses and script. The medieval bed was elaborate. Four-poster beds with flowers or curtains and thick-jewel coloured comforters are examples of medieval themed bedding. The walls are often painted to appear castle-like with large stones painted from top to bottom. A coat of arms also is a popular item for the medieval wall. Accessories can include heavy curtains in rich colours, candelabras, Celtic crosses or floral wreaths.
