Atkins Recommended Snack Foods

Updated April 17, 2017

The Atkins diet is a popular and effective method of losing weight. It works by limiting the amount of carbohydrates in a person's food intake by counting the number of net carbohydrates, according to the website Atkins.com. Net carbohydrates are carbohydrates minus fibre content. Low net carbohydrate foods include such things as dense-heavy vegetables. As such, it is often hard for followers of the diet to find suitable snacks.

Prepackaged Atkins-Specific Snacks

A wide range of Atkins-specific snacks are on the market designed by followers of the diet, according to AtkinsDietAdvisor.com. There are diet bars, known as Atkins Diet Advantage Bars, which come in a variety of flavours and textures, from granola to brownies. There are also baking products if you wish to make your own snacks, with a low carbohydrate bake mix readily available. Other Atkins-specific snacks include shakes and liquid meals in flavours such as strawberry, vanilla and chocolate.

Dry Roasted Peanuts

Most nuts and seeds are very low in net carbohydates, according to the website Carbs-Information.com. A total of about 28 peanuts has only 3.6 grams of net carbohydrates, although they are quite high in calories. High levels of fibre make nuts suitable for followers of the Atkins diet.

Beef and Crème Fraiche Mix

Sugars are avoided on the Atkins diet, so a good snack often includes healthy mixtures of foods such as meats and dairy products. Try mixing red meat such as beef with a range of dense vegetables and creme fraiche, according to the website Low Carb Is Easy. The creme fraiche adds a thickening and luxurious creamy taste to an otherwise dry meal.

Boiled Eggs

There are only 0.6 grams of net carbohydrates in a boiled egg, making them favourites for Atkins followers, according to the Carbs-Information website. Eggs should be eaten with a low cholesterol eating plan if the full egg is eaten, but if only the egg white is consumed, it is a great snack for someone on the Atkins diet.

Soya-Based Cakes and Biscuits

While cakes and biscuits are high in sugar, by substituting soya flour, soya bran, and ground almonds for wheat flour, you can make a low carbohydrate snack that is tasty and healthy, according to the Low Carb Is Easy website. Also, swap sugar for sweetener to reduce carbohydrates further.

Cubed Cheese and Meats

Keep a ready supply of cubed cheeses like cheddar and meats like salami for small, easy-to-eat snacks. The Low Carb Is Easy website recommends having ham and cheese snacks to keep the Atkins levels constant throughout the day.
