Make-up is used to enhance your natural beauty. For a teenage African American girl, choosing the right make-up that matches your skin tone is important. It is practical to experiment with colours and finally decide on what looks good for dark and light skin tones. The tip is to not overdo make-up. The best look for teenagers is a clean and natural look.

Foundation

For dark toned skin use a creamy foundation with a light dusting of powder. Your foundation should be applied lightly and should be non-oily to help fight skin irritation. Use concealer to only cover small dark blemishes on your face. A rule to follow is to pick a foundation that is a little bit lighter than your natural skin tone. Make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying any type of foundation or concealer. In addition, apply your foundation in a well-lit area. As you learn how to apply make-up you will notice that once your skin is exposed to the sun your make-up can look much different.

Blush

Use blush sparingly and try not to focus so much on covering your cheekbones. As a teenager the contour of your face has not completely developed. African American teen girls should focus on using dark-toned blush and apply it lightly with a large, firm make-up brush. Some of the colours that may look good with dark and light skin tone are mauve, dark peach, wine or the darkest red.

Eye Shadow

Experiment with colours when looking for the right eye shadow. Eye make-up is worn to bring the colour out in your eyes. Teenagers have younger looking faces and do not need dramatic eyes to make a statement. African American teens should stick with warm colours like bronze, gold, orange, mauve or dark green eye shadow. If you're going out with friends at night, apply eye shadow colours like silver, black or dark brown.

Mascara and Eyeliner

Mascara highlights your eyelashes and eyeliner shows off your eye colour. Apply a light coat of black or brown mascara to the tip of your lashes. Use eyeliner in various colours to accentuate your skin tone. For a dark skinned African American girl, colours like brown, black, blue and green eyeliner could look great with the right eyeshade on the eyes. Lighter skinned African American teens could use the same colours and even go lighter, applying a very light blue liner to the eyes.

Lips

Using a light coat of lip gloss will help you achieve a nice clean look that is appropriate for an African American teenager. Apply a coat of shiny lip gloss if you plan on attending an event in the evening. Stick to colours that bring out the contour of your lips such as pinks, nudes and browns.
