Cabinet files or Cab for short are actually a library of compressed installation files that are copied to a user's system. Microsoft originally used these files to reduce the number of floppy disks needed to transfer files. Today, Cab files are used to reduce download time or reduce the space installation files take up for use with portable computer systems such as the Pocket PC.
