The story of Tarzan has had many incarnations, including books, television, radio, comic books and movies. Jane, the woman from civilisation whom Tarzan falls for, is an essential part of the story because it shows Tarzan's innate romantic side. The iconic couple of Tarzan and Jane have become a quintessential symbol of primitive, savage love and is a fun costume idea for couples. Tarzan and Jane’s attire may be scant, but there is plenty of opportunity for creative elaboration.

Tarzan's Hair

Remember that apes raised Tarzan in the jungle—so his hairstyle was less than salon quality. Capture the quality of Tarzan’s unkempt mane by turning a cotton mop head into a wig. Dye the mop head brown with clothing dye and secure it to your head with hair clips. The mop strands will look like funky, matted locks of hair.

Jungle Jewelry

Tarzan’s loincloth and Jane’s animal skin coverings are a given, but further jungle jewellery will add ornamentation to the costumes. Leather wristbands, ankle bands, and necklaces or earrings with faux bone or chunky wooden beads will all add to the jungle theme.

Tarzan and Jane have been hanging out in the jungle sun, so there skin should be dark and leathery. Create a fake tan by rubbing bronzer or a dark concealer all over the exposed parts of your body.

When Jane First Met Tarzan

Jane came from the city and was saved from apes by Tarzan after being marooned with her father in the jungle. Typically people dressing up like Tarzan and Jane both wear jungle attire, but another option is to dress Jane like she would have looked when she and Tarzan first met—in a formal, period dress, tattered and torn by the apes, with dirty, bruised and scratched skin and messed up hair.

We all think of this jungle couple as being physically well built. However, we aren’t all endowed with bulging muscles. Create hilarious fake abs using airbrush make-up or body spray paint. A fake muscle T-shirt is another funny option for Tarzan.

Tarzan's Teeth

Tarzan probably didn’t have toothpaste or access to a dentist, and it is likely his teeth were not in the best condition. Reveal what the stories don’t usually want us to know about Tarzan’s oral health with some gnarly, fake Halloween teeth.

Jane's Hair

Jane loved the flora and fauna of the jungle, and her costume should illustrate that. Include tropical flowers and paper butterflies in her hair.
