Ex-police officers who retire or leave the force for other reasons often continue to work in the field in a different capacity. Many companies hire former police officers because of their skills in law enforcement and their ability to communicate with witnesses, suspects and officers.

Investigators and Private Detectives

Investigators and private detectives can work as independent contractors for companies, attorneys and insurance firms or in protective services for celebrities or executives. Private detectives can gather information for custody cases or worker's compensation claims or find people who have disappeared. Some investigators will work for a company investigating theft or employees.

Security Guards

Security officers or guards inspect and patrol premises, often as independent contractors or as employees of a security company. The guard watches for intruders, fire, illegal activity and vandalism. Security guards can be static, which is stationary in one place, or mobile, which would require walking to different locations to ensure that the area is secure and safe. Security officers can work as armoured car guards or as gaming surveillance officers in casinos, or they can provide security for events.

Corrections Officer

Former police officers often work in local jails, state prisons or federal prisons as corrections officers. Corrections officers maintain security and prevent escapes, assaults and disturbances. The officer is responsible for the safety of each inmate and often escorts inmates to and from meals, showers, work stations and visitation. Corrections officers also work as bailiffs, court officers or marshals who keep courtrooms safe and secure.

Jobs Within Law Enforcement

Some police officers can no longer do field work as a patrol officer. These officers can work within the police department in other capacities such as cold-case review, administrative positions, investigative management or forensics. Some officers can work as community officers in schools or neighbourhoods.
