Organising hair accessories is sometimes a challenge. (shamrock hair ribbon image by morrbyte from

Girls’ hair accessories often end up scattered all over the bathroom sink or the top of a dresser. Their small size and often-odd shapes make it difficult to find an organiser that works well. Making an organiser for your child’s hair accessories can be a fun craft for you and your child to do together.

Picture Frame Organizer

Turn an ordinary unfinished wood picture frame into a cute, easy-to-make hair accessory organiser. Paint the picture frame with acrylic paint. Remove the glass and back. Attach different-sized grosgrain ribbons across the back of the opening. Attach a longer ribbon to the top as a hanger. Clip barrettes to the ribbons or push earrings through the ribbons.

Acrylic Boxes

Small acrylic boxes are ideal for holding girls’ hair accessories. Their clear sides and convenient size make it easy to identify what’s in the box. Decorate the outside of the box with paint pens and rub-ons. Decorate them to match your bathroom or bedroom. Set them out on the vanity or on top of a dresser for a cute, colourful, practical accessory.

Ribbon Bow

Create a large ribbon bow, and clip barrettes to its long tails. Tie a bow using 1-inch-wide or larger ribbon. Wired ribbon will work best as it will give the bow shape. Leave long tails, at least 6-8 inches, at the bottom of the bow. You can spray the ribbon with spray starch to help it hold its shape. Hang the ribbon on the wall and attach the hair accessories to the tails.

Coat Pegs

Repurpose a small coat rack to hold your little girl’s hair accessories. Buy or make your own unfinished wooden coat pegs. Paint or stain the pegs to match the room. Decorate with paint, rub-ons, stickers or paint pens. Hang the coat pegs on the wall. Hang headbands and ponytail holders on the pegs.

Wooden Spools

Large wooden spools make great organisers for ponytail holders and headbands. Paint several large spools and a flat board. Glue the spools to the board. Use paint pens or markers to personalise the organiser. Hang the board or set it on top of a dresser. Hang ponytail holders and headbands over the spools.
