Cool Things to Build Out of Wood
Taking a piece of wood and creating something that nobody else sees is always cool. (planing a table top image by leemarusa from Fotolia.com)

Choosing wood as your creative outlet makes a great deal of sense because you can cut and shape it fairly easily even without using electricity. Wood offers the chance to experiment with purely creative design or create a functional work to serve you for life. Not to be underestimated is the fact that wood is far more available and affordable to the amateur artisan than marble, brass or ceramics.

Figure Carving

One of the coolest ways to show off your developing wood carving skills is to take a single block of wood and reveal to your amazed guests how it was hiding a well-designed face all along. Woods that are especially well suited to fine carving projects include basswood, butternut and mahogany. The actual species of tree that provides your carving block is less important than the presence of straight grain. Cutting with the grain will provide the best results.

Address Marker

If you or someone you know has consistent trouble with guests locating their house for the first time, consider building a driveway marker. You can make a simple fence-corner marker of graduated slats on which you attach address numbers. It can also serve as a decorative planter to hold flowers that further help identify the address to first-time guests.

Bent Solid Wood Chair

Few wood projects are cooler to unveil than a solid wood chair that showcases your ability to bend wood to your will. The curved pieces of solid wood have a futuristic feel that fits a contemporary design scheme. Counterintuitively, hardwoods actually bend better than softwoods, according to Nick Engler in his book “Woodworking Wisdom.” Engler recommends the process of kerf bending as the easiest method for bending wood.

High-Rise Playhouse

You need advanced carpentry skills for what should prove to be one of the coolest projects you’ll ever make, at least according to your young children. “Better Homes and Gardens Playsets” contains a design scheme for an elevated playhouse made entirely of pressure-treated lumber for the posts and floor joists and composite decking material for a porch floor.

Shaving Mug and Brush Stand

Working with wood can take you down a road of nostalgia that ends with your tossing those cans of shaving gel and applying cream to your face the old-fashioned way with a brush. You’ll need a stand to hold your shaving brush. The turning abilities of a lathe are perfect for creating a decorative wooden holder. A smoothly polished bowl for mixing your cream is pretty nifty to have as well.
