Aeronautical Engineering involves the creation and function of aircraft. Known by its other names of Aerospace or Astronautics, all disciplines focus on air flight, from the small prop plane to a space shuttle. The field is recognised worldwide, as flight has become a standard part of most societies. Students wishing to obtain a quality education in the field have a number of top institutions from which to choose.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Aeronautical Engineering program is the number one program of its kind, as noted in "U.S. News & World Report's" Best Colleges 2010, Undergraduate Engineering Specialties. The school was measured, as with the other institutions, that offer not only an undergraduate-level education in the field, but a doctoral as well. The program was begun in 1896, and has grown to include a number of courses of study. MIT's undergraduate program is geared for training its students for basic insight and knowledge into an aeronautics education. Students may choose from one of three degree options, including Aerospace Engineering and Aerospace Engineering with Information Technology. There is also an option for an individually-geared program which must be proposed by the faculty. Graduate students can choose from a number of paths, including a MS in Engineering and Management, or a MS in Technology and Policy. Doctoral offerings include Aeronautics and Astronautics, Aircraft Systems Engineering, Space Systems, and a number of other programs. As with most program as MIT, students should investigate their interests early on as to not miss any pertinent deadlines, and to prepare for the application process.

Georgia Tech

The Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Engineering offering of Aerospace Engineering is the number two program, as ranked through research by "U.S. News & World Report's" Best Colleges 2010. Georgia Tech's Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering offers its undergraduate and graduate students a number of options in pursuing this field of study. Aerodynamics, Flight Mechanics and Control, and Performance and Design, are just a few of the options a bachelor's degree seeker can take advantage of. Graduate students also have an array of choices, with an option at distance learning as well. The school is also known for its research achievements, both from faculty and students, as not only are graduate students encourage to participate, but undergraduates may as well. The university receives financial research assistance from various programs for which Aerospace Engineering is a priority, such as military branches and NASA.
