There are numerous things that can be done to reduce day to day noises. The methods used to reduce noise depend on where you want the noise reduced and where. For example, there are things you can do to reduce noise in a house, a room or even simply in the space you are located in.

Doors and Windows

Buying soundproof windows and doors can be expensive, but will help reduce noise. Short of buying soundproof windows, simply having new insulated windows will aid in reducing outside noise from being heard in a house. Likewise, a solid door absent of windows will block out more noise than an older or hollow door, or a door with a window in it.

It has been shown that fabric can help reduce noise. Installing carpeting throughout the house is one option. Placing fabric curtains over all the windows, and putting pillows on furniture can also work. The thicker the material, the better it will work in reducing the noise. Buying thick heavy curtains to go over the windows will shut out a lot of noise. The fabric will also help absorb noise coming from inside the house, and will reduce an echo. Another way to incorporate fabric into a room to reduce the noise is by hanging it from the walls. Instead of painting or hanging wallpaper, fabric can be hung over the walls. Hang the fabric in strips like wallpaper. Attach the fabric at the top and the bottom of the wall. You can pull the fabric tight and have it flat up against the wall, or you can allow it to hang a little loose and give the walls texture and dimension. Overlapping the strips of material slightly will prevent the material from separating and exposing the wall beneath it.

Ear Protection

If you are simply looking to reduce the noise around you as you work or move, you can buy ear plugs or headphones. These are common for people who work in loud areas, such as construction, or who are firing guns. Blocking out nearby loud noises will protect the ear drums. In these situations, both ear plugs and headphones are highly recommended to reduce the noise.
