  1. 1

Wash the window frame and scrape off any loose paint. Be sure not to soak the wood with water. Brushing the dirt off with a damp rag will work just fine.

  2. 2

Lay the window frame down on a flat surface. Measure up 6 inches from the bottom of the window on the right side and mark . Repeat this process on the left side of the frame.

  3. 3

Take your wooden stakes and line them up with your pencil marks. Be sure that the spike part of the stake is pointing down. Nail or screw your stakes in place. If you place one nail or screw on the top of the stake, and one on the bottom, this will ensure a stable base for your trellis.

  4. 4

Find the perfect spot in your garden or lawn. Measure the length between your two stakes and mark. Dig a shallow hole where each mark is. Stand your trellis up and place the stakes in the freshly dug holes. Cover the holes with dirt, packing firmly.

  5. 5

Plant your vining plants. Plant one on each side of your window pane trellis and carefully wrap the vines through the sides and insides of the window. If needed, secure the vines with trash bag ties or thin wire.

  6. 6

Water your plants according to the instructions.

Tips and warnings

  • Try attaching two window panes together for a larger trellis.
